When you think of “Turkish breakfast”, you think of SO many Turkish side dishes, but have you ever thought of a sausage dish? Listen, you gotta give it a try. Sosis yemeği literally means “sausage dish” in Turkish. You can make it as simple as the one I’m showing or you can even sauté it with onions, fresh tomatoes, peppers…
Sausages were not really a “Turkish thing” back in the day, but came from Europe during the Ottoman era. Over time, it became more localised and people produced versions of the sausage that suits the local tastes more. It especially became more popular when processed sausages were widely available in supermarkets, which made it both a convenient & affordable meal. (Especially for students too, it’s such a quick & filling meal, which is also perfecttt for lazy or very busy days).
Ingredients
✿ 1 can of Ege Turk sausages (small)
✿ 2–3 tbsp tomato paste
✿ 1–2 tsp red pepper paste (optional, for extra depth)
✿ 1 tsp Turkish chili flakes (or to taste)
✿ 2 tbsp olive oil
✿ ¼ cup water (adjust to keep sauce thick)
✿ Bread for serving
Instructions
Start by warming the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat and then add the tomato paste along with the Turkish chili flakes, stirring occasionally so the paste doesn’t burn.
If you want a deeper flavour, add a bit of red pepper paste as well & cook everything for a few minutes until the paste darkens slightly and smells fragrant.
Pour in a small amount of water to loosen the sauce just a little, making sure it stays thick and rich.
Cut the sausages in half and stir them into the sauce, letting everything simmer together until the sausages are fully heated and coated in the sauce, which should take about 5–7 minutes.
Serve immediately, either by dipping some bread straight into the sauce or enjoying the sausages on their own!
